Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn revealed that the Caped Crusader’s look was intentional, stemming from his reluctance to reveal too much, too soon. “When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman, and I was saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that!’” Gunn shared. “I kept insisting, ‘More silhouette! More silhouette! More silhouette!’”
This decision to obscure details aligns with Gunn’s broader storytelling strategy. Instead of it being a full-on blast, he aims to subtly weave Batman’s presence into the DCU. The creative choice ensures fans understand that Batman is already a known entity in this universe.
“I think it’s a great way to show that Batman does exist,” Gunn explained. “He already exists in this universe. Just like in the Superman movie, we see that Superman is already known by the people in Metropolis. We don’t need to hear the origin story again.” This narrative approach allows the DCU to skip over already-established origin stories and focus on Batman’s ongoing impact.

“This is the DCU Batman,” Gunn emphasized. “Listen, I gotta tell you, I just love Batman. I’ve loved him since I was a little kid. He’s one of my favorite characters. I’ve gone on the record in the past saying my favorite character is Batman.” He also teased “great things” ahead, particularly with Batman and Superman sharing the screen.
“He’s the most popular superhero in the world, and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman. And together,” Gunn said, a note of genuine excitement in his voice. Additionally, while Gunn’s comments leave plenty to the imagination, they also underscore his commitment to treating these characters with the respect and reverence they deserve.
