As the new head of operations for DC films alongside Peter Safran, James Gunn has envisioned an interconnected universe much like the MCU for DC. But with a wide range of characters and tones in the DC universe, Gunn knows merely copying the already successful MCU formula won’t cut it out.
James Gunn wants the DC Universe to work on the basis of the diversity found within the comics, meaning different genres and styles between each project. This is exactly the reason why the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ is kicking things off in the new DC Universe in December, giving fans a taste of the new world Gunn is planning to conjure.
James Gunn Wants To Delve Into DC’s Unexplored Side
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn talked about why ‘Creature Commandos’ was the perfect place to kickstart things for the new DC Universe. “The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman”. With ‘Creature Commandos’, Gunn wants to “retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it“.

Gunn even brought up his experience working on the ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘ and said, “I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos. That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality“. But unlike the Guardians who are heroes, the characters in ‘Creature Commandos’ may not have “good characters at their heart“, says Gunn.
The first season of the show aims to explore each of the character’s back story, with Gunn explaining how the episodes will dive into “a different character’s backstory and pathos”.
James Gunn Says ‘Creature Commandos’ Has A Touch Of Innocence
Even a seemingly straightforward character from ‘Creature Commandos‘, like the robotic G.I. Robot, has more complexity underneath. James Gunn revealed that Sean Gunn, the voice of the character who has worked with him multiple times before, “gave the character this sweet, mechanic innocence“.
Fans will learn of G.I. Robot’s “very sad history from World War II,” where he felt at home with the soldiers he warred together with. ‘Creature Commandos‘ gives each bizarre character personalization and characterizations beyond just action figures. As Gunn promised, it provides true “hints for things that are coming” in the DC Universe.

With ‘Creature Commandos‘, James Gunn aims to take the initial steps of the seemingly bold plan he has as new head of DC. With larger blockbusters to come such as next year’s ‘Superman‘, this show exhibits Gunn’s desire to honor the source material’s full diversity in tones and characters.
