‘Lanterns’ Made Guy Gardner Look Weak Just To Set Up John Stewart

The ‘Lanterns’ finale had one of its most important character moments when Guy Gardner and John Stewart finally clashed over what should happen next. On paper, it should have been a fascinating power struggle between two very different Green Lanterns.

Instead, the confrontation left some viewers wondering why Guy suddenly seemed so willing to surrender his authority.

Guy Gardner Should Have Had The Experience Advantage

The problem isn’t necessarily that John challenged him. John is supposed to be stubborn, principled, and willing to question authority. The issue is that Guy’s response doesn’t seem to match the character’s experience or personality. That makes the scene feel less like Guy choosing to step aside and more like the story needing John to win.

Guy may be arrogant and reckless, but he’s also supposed to be an experienced Green Lantern who has spent years dealing with threats far beyond Earth. By contrast, John’s journey in ‘Lanterns’ has only just begun. That difference should matter.

John is still learning how the ring works, learning the responsibilities that come with being a Lantern and figuring out where he fits within the larger cosmic system. His determination is compelling, but experience is one area where Guy should have had an obvious advantage.

That’s why the confrontation becomes especially strange when John’s ring is effectively out of power. John telling Guy that he’s taking control of Earth could have been the perfect moment for Guy’s arrogance to finally kick in. Instead, Guy essentially accepts the situation and walks away. And honestly, that feels backwards.

The Scene Needed A Real Guy Gardner Response

Guy doesn’t have to defeat John physically for the scene to work. He simply needed to behave like someone who believes he has earned his position. He could have challenged John’s authority, called out his lack of experience, or demanded that he surrender the ring until he understood what he was doing.

That would have created genuine tension while still allowing John to eventually emerge as the more important Lantern. Instead, the scene seems designed primarily to establish John’s future importance.

That is particularly noticeable with ‘Man of Tomorrow’ reportedly positioning John as a major part of the DCU’s next Superman story. Building John up makes sense, but the easiest way to elevate one character isn’t always to diminish another.

Guy Gardner can be an arrogant disaster and still be extremely competent. In fact, that’s what makes him interesting. The finale had an opportunity to show why these two ‘Lanterns’ are fundamentally different. Instead, it may have sacrificed Guy’s credibility just to make John’s rise happen faster.
