‘Lanterns‘ has spent much of its story making viewers wonder who is responsible for Hal Jordan’s apparent death. Every episode seems to point toward another suspect, but one theory suggests the answer could be hiding in plain sight: Lianna.
Hal May Have Used Himself As Bait
The twist would also fit surprisingly well with the complicated plan Hal appears to be putting together. Rather than being caught off guard, Hal may have deliberately arranged the circumstances surrounding his death to expose the truth about the Manhunters and the people controlling them.

The theory begins with Hal walking out of prison, something already shown in the trailer. He could secretly make a deal with Bernadette, essentially repeating the strategy he used earlier when he handed the ring to John and made himself the bait. This time, however, the stakes are much higher.
John’s mom, Bernadette could contact him while knowing Lianna is monitoring him and give him the exact location of Hal. Hal wouldn’t apologize because, from his perspective, there would still be nothing to apologize for. The plan wouldn’t have reached its final stage yet.
Then Lianna arrives. If she kills Hal while he is no longer wearing a ring, the Corps may not respond in the same way it would to the murder of an active Lantern. More importantly, Hal may have gotten dangerously close to discovering what Lianna really knows about the Manhunters. That could explain why she has been so determined to push him away from the Corps.
Sinestro Could Be the Missing Piece
While John investigates Hal’s apparent death, he might discover that Hal secretly engineered Sinestro’s escape. Hal may have deliberately sent Sinestro to the mysterious planet because he knew Lianna would never look there. The location could also represent one of the Guardians’ greatest failures, making it the perfect hiding place.

And that discovery could completely change John’s understanding of Hal. After everything the Corps did to Sinestro, Hal may have finally begun questioning whether Sinestro was entirely wrong about them. But the biggest twist could still be waiting.
Hal may not actually stay dead. If Zoe’s explanation of the Manhunter technology is connected to what happens to him, Hal could return long enough to finally surrender his ring and keep his promise to Bernadette. He could then explain to John why he kept him in the dark.
The real mystery of ‘Lanterns’ may not be who killed Hal. It may be why Hal needed to die in the first place.
