Director Matt Reeves just got people even more excited for ‘The Batman: Part II‘. The director shared some cryptic posts on social media to reveal a strong new group of cast members, and it looks like Gotham City is about to get darker and more complicated.

Reeves directed the well-liked 2022 film that starred Robert Pattinson as Batman. He has been teasing fans on X with moody GIFs and welcome messages. A few days ago, he confirmed several big new names joining the star-studded cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, and Sebastian Koch. The word is now that filming will start in the next few months.

Sebastian Stan Cast as Harvey Dent in ‘The Batman Part II’

People first heard about Johansson being involved late last year. Now it is official, as Reeves shared a clip from her 2013 sci-fi movie ‘Under the Skin‘ and wrote “Next exit, Gotham… Welcome.” Many think she might play Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent, which would tie into one of Batman’s most famous comic storylines, ‘The Long Halloween‘.

Sebastian Stan, who just starred in Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts‘, will play Harvey Dent. He is the ambitious district attorney who later turns into Two-Face. Reeves welcomed him with the post, “In a Gotham state of mind… Welcome.” Reports say Charles Dance from ‘Game of Thrones‘ will play Dent’s father. That should add family history and weight to the character’s backstory.

Brian Tyree Henry from ‘Eternals‘ and ‘Joker‘ is also on board, along with German actor Sebastian Koch from ‘Homeland‘. Reeves introduced them with his usual GIF posts, but their exact roles are still a secret. These new names show that Reeves wants to keep telling grounded stories focused on character, in a world still recovering from the Riddler’s attack and the flood from the first movie.

The Batman Part IIReturning Stars and Production Update

Pattinson is back as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Jeffrey Wright returns as Lt. James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell reprises his breakout role as Oz Cobb, also known as The Penguin. Jayme Lawson and Gil Perez Abraham are also coming back as Mayor Bella Reál and Officer Martinez. Barry Keoghan is expected to return as the Joker after his brief but creepy tease in the first film.

The sequel is co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. It picks up after the 2022 blockbuster, which made over $772 million around the world and led to the well received HBO show ‘The Penguin‘. Reeves has said he wants to expand this noir style universe, digging deeper into Gotham’s corruption, the Wayne family history, and moral gray areas.

Fans have been excited about all this star power. Mixing big name actors with Reeves’ gritty style should make a thriller that goes beyond the usual superhero movie. As one insider put it, the cast is a “perfect marriage of blockbuster appeal and serious dramatic weight.”

With production speeding up, ‘The Batman: Part II‘ looks like it will be one of the biggest releases of 2027. Plot details and the exact roles are being kept quiet, but Reeves’ slow and careful buildup has already created a lot of buzz. Gotham is waiting, and it has never looked more invitingly dark.

The movie is set to come out in theaters on October 1, 2027.
