“We Are The Bridge Between The Two Films”: ‘The Penguin’ Series To Pave Way For ‘The Batman’ Sequel

The highly anticipated ‘The Penguin’ series on HBO Max is shaping up to be an essential spin-off to 2022’s ‘The Batman‘. Slated to premiere in September, it seems crucial to Matt Reeves’ world-building and expansion of the new Batman universe dubbed as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” The show will star Colin Farrell who reprises his role as Oz Cobblepot and according to insiders, the show directly sets the stage for Reeves’ sequel to ‘The Batman‘.

Reeves leads the “Batman Epic Crime Saga“, unfolding interconnected movies and TV shows centered on Gotham’s Dark Knight. ‘The Penguin‘ is the first in line of the extended saga and will furthermore explore the events of the first movie. This is what showrunner Lauren LeFranc revealed about the show so far.

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc revealed while speaking to Entertainment Weekly that, “We are the bridge between the two films…we’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned“. As the plot of ‘The Batman‘ ended with Paul Dano’s Riddler exposing corruption and flooding Gotham, ‘The Penguin‘ will depict the following “power vacuum” in the criminal underworld.

According to Reeves, the series will show Oz Cobblepot as an “underestimated“, yet strategically rising to the top as he is a “mover and a shaker“. He also added on saying,  “This movie creates a power vacuum, and because Penguin is so underestimated, people don’t really see who he is“. By portraying Cobblepot’s come-up in the underworld, the series will hand ‘The Batman‘ sequel a new Gotham landscape fans can look forward to.

Farrell eagerly expands on Oz Cobblepot’s layers, which fans glimpsed and speculated about in ‘The Batman‘. The actor stated that he loved doing the part in the Batman film and the idea of having eight hours to delve into the character’s psychology and backstory. Flashbacks will reveal more of Cobbepot’s childhood and relationship with his mentally ill mother.

Christin Milioti, who played the mother in ‘How I Met Your Mother‘, also joins as Carmine Falcone’s daughter Sofia. Sofia and Oz share a deeply personal backstory that connects them on an intimate level, enhancing their relationship’s depth. If the series fulfills its potential, it could very well redefine Gotham and set Cobblepot as a cornerstone in future Batman stories in a thrilling fashion for fans to appreciate.
