The highly anticipated ‘The Penguin’ series on HBO Max is shaping up to be an essential spin-off to 2022’s ‘The Batman‘. Slated to premiere in September, it seems crucial to Matt Reeves’ world-building and expansion of the new Batman universe dubbed as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” The show will star Colin Farrell who reprises his role as Oz Cobblepot and according to insiders, the show directly sets the stage for Reeves’ sequel to ‘The Batman‘.
Reeves leads the “Batman Epic Crime Saga“, unfolding interconnected movies and TV shows centered on Gotham’s Dark Knight. ‘The Penguin‘ is the first in line of the extended saga and will furthermore explore the events of the first movie. ‘The Penguin’ Will Help Bridge The Narrative Gap
Showrunner Lauren LeFranc revealed while speaking to Entertainment Weekly that, “We are the bridge between the two films…we’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned“. As the plot of ‘The Batman‘ ended with Paul Dano’s Riddler exposing corruption and flooding Gotham, ‘The Penguin‘ will depict the following “power vacuum” in the criminal underworld.
According to Reeves, the series will show Oz Cobblepot as an “underestimated“, yet strategically rising to the top as he is a “mover and a shaker“. He also added on saying, “This movie creates a power vacuum, and because Penguin is so underestimated, people don’t really see who he is“. By portraying Cobblepot’s come-up in the underworld, the series will hand ‘The Batman‘ sequel a new Gotham landscape fans can look forward to.
