What Is Rachel Zegler’s ‘Snow White’ Controversy?

Disney has a new live-action movie and it probably is the one all of us have been waiting for eagerly. After ‘Aladin’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’, Disney is now making a live-action remake of ‘Snow White And The Seven Dwarves’. Rachel Zegler plays the role of Snow White, while Gal Gadot is playing the role of the evil stepmother.

However, people aren’t too happy with the casting choice. Let’s check what the controversy is all about.

Twitter Isn’t Happy About The ‘Snow White’ Casting

‘Snow White’ is getting a live-action remake

Why might that be? You guessed it. Fans think Rachel Zegler is not the best option to be cast as Snow White. And as the name suggests- Snow White is supposed to be fair. The actress is half Latina if you don’t know.

The core element of the story is the princess being fairer than her stepmother (Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all). Hence, the evil queen throws her out of the kingdom for outshining her. Now the casting choice of the makers has left fans questioning if the live-action remake will be able to truly capture the beauty and authenticity of the original fairytale.

Not just this. Another thing that has fans mad is that the live-action movie is that it’s not going to have the seven dwarves. It’s titled just ‘Snow White‘. On top of it, the story, according to the cast, doesn’t revolve around the prince saving the princess.

This is not the first time fans have been upset about Disney changing the race of Disney princesses in their live-action remakes. ‘The Little Mermaid’ too received a lot of hate for the casting of a Black actress in a role that was originally white. Many argued that instead of changing conventional stories and races to include diversity in order to suit the woke audience of today’s generation, Disney should instead come up with new princesses to promote diversity.

Fans are now speculating the movie will most likely not be a success.

Disney looks to be addressing the dwarf characters in a new way in order to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated blockbuster. During the D23 event, lead actress Rachel Zegler hinted at the story’s modern revisions intended to appeal to a more progressive audience.

Due to the absence of the titular Seven Dwarfs from the original film, Disney changed the title to just ‘Snow White‘. The film also acquires a new character who will play Snow White’s love interest. All the numerous changes will definitely alter the movie as a whole.

Filmmakers Greta Gerwig (‘Barbie‘) and Erin Cressida Wilson (‘The Girl on the Train‘) have written the live-action adaptation of the classic fairytale. Marc Webb is directing the movie. Oscar nominee Marc Platt (‘La La Land‘) will co-produce the picture alongside co-producer Russell Allen. The movie is releasing in 2024.
