“They Got The Idea From Me”: Kanye West Claims ‘Django Unchained’ Story Was Stolen From Him

Kanye West has claimed that Quentin Tarantino and Jamie Foxx stole the idea of Django Unchained from him. Lately, West is under criticism for his recent problematic comments and anti-Semitic tweets. Many labels have pulled away from their collaboration with Ye, on account of his erratic-problematic behaviour.

Foxx, who played the lead role in Tarantino’s Django Unchained in 2012, also featured on West’s song. West claimed to have pitched a slavery-themed story for the music video – but, in the end, the idea wasn’t complete. The video, which starred Foxx, was directed by Hype Williams.

Kanye West spoke on ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored’ interview and said that the ‘Django Unchained’ story was his idea. Ye said, “Actually, [Tarantino] and Jamie, they got the idea from me, because the idea for Django, I pitched to Jamie Foxx and Quentin Tarantino as the video for ‘Gold Digger’. And then Tarantino turned it into a film.” No comments have been made by Tarantino yet regarding Ye’s comments.

West has recently found himself embroiled in controversy over a number of antisemtic remarks, and has consequently been dropped by major fashion brands. These include Balenciaga, Adidas, and even Vogue. In 2019, it was reported that Quentin Tarantino was working on an adaptation of ‘Django Unchained’ comic book miniseries.

What Did Ye Say About Free Speech In The Interview?

Before revealing that he pitched the idea for ‘Django Unchained’, Piers Morgan prefaced, “Do you believe there are limits to free speech, and if there are, what are they?” Ye then went on to explain how Tarantino’s film demonstrates the absence of limits to free speech. He then added that the movie is filled with racial slurs and still readily accepted by audiences.

Tarantino both wrote and directed ‘Django Unchained’, with Foxx starring in the lead role. The revisionist Western film follows Django’s attempt to free his wife from enslavement after freeing himself, partnering with a German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz. In the same interview, Ye also stated that if he had worded his social media posts in a more sensitive way, “then we wouldn’t be here right now,” referring to the live television interview he had secured.
