But now that a new version is on the way, naturally the question arises: how can it possibly live up to the 1995 classic? The answer is that it probably doesn’t need to.

That is one of the most beautiful aspects of Jane Austen’s work. You can return to an Austen novel at different points in your life and somehow find it feeling completely new. Your perspective changes, your understanding of the character changes and suddenly the story has something completely different to say. It is a different read every single time.
Like any author, Austen also leaves gaps in her stories. There are things left unsaid and moments we never see. And it is the readers who naturally fill those spaces with their own interpretation. For new filmmakers, they get to interpret those silences, imagine the unseen and bring their own understanding to our screens. This is what makes every Austen adaptation so special.
Every Austen Adaptation Brings Something New To The Table
Whether it is the modern and quirky take of ‘Persuasion’ (2022) or the stylish and chic adaptation we see in ‘Emma’ (2020), every adaptation brings something new to the conversation. Some work better than others, of course, but none of them needs to erase what came before.
The new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ needs to do exactly what every Austen adaptation has always done: offer another perspective. The 1995 film gave us one interpretation of Austen’s novel, and a spectacular one at that. But it was still just one interpretation. The new film does not need to compete with that version, nor should it try to.

The new film has a different job. It gets to tell Austen’s story to a new generation. This time through a different set of eyes, with different priorities and a different understanding.
And if it can make us return to Austen’s novel and notice something we had never seen before, then that is more than enough.
The New ‘Sense And Sensibility’ Is As Exciting As It Gets
In a film industry that has historically been filled with distinctly male voices, we need more narratives that allow women to exist as complicated, layered characters. And that is exactly what we expect to see in the new ‘Sense and Sensibility’.
In an interview, Daisy Edgar-Jones said, “It’s great that more and more stories are being made with women front and centre.” She has also revealed that the new film is making the decision to place Elinor and Marianne’s sisterhood above the romance.
The teaser photos and trailers we have seen so far are simply gorgeous. Some of the aesthetic choices can be questioned, but we should probably give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, there is something inherently heartwarming about hearing your favourite Austen lines being delivered in a fresh tone and setting. Even more intriguing are those scenes in the trailers that feel new and raise hundreds of questions about exactly how this version intends to approach the original story. There is probably no better time than autumn to welcome a new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and revisit the old versions once again.
