When Ultron first appeared in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, he sounded like a villain making an absurdly extreme argument. His solution was horrifying, but there was something uncomfortable buried inside his worldview: humanity kept trying to protect systems that were already failing instead of questioning whether those systems could actually survive.
Why Ultron’s Biggest Warning Is Coming True
The Avengers defeated Ultron, but the MCU has been years in the making, and it has had a very complicated problem. The fall of Sokovia eventually led to the Sokovia Accords, and Thanos’ assault left behind the effects of the Blip on Earth. Then things got even stranger.

‘WandaVision’ demonstrated the power of grief, literally changing reality. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ opened up a portal between worlds, and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ brought the terrifying threat of incursions. In the meantime, Loki announced that time itself could split into a myriad of forks. So, Ultron’s argument doesn’t sound so absurd.
From Ultron’s Broken World to Doom’s Battleworld
The intriguing aspect is what the MCU is going to do next. With the arrival of Battleworld, it may be possible that Doctor Doom has a deranged version of Ultron’s philosophy. Ultron felt the world was fundamentally flawed and should be destroyed.

However, Doom might have another idea: The old reality is collapsing, and he will create a new one. That distinction could make Doom even more deadly. Ultron wished to destroy man’s flawed system. Doom could look at the collapsing multiverse and reach a different conclusion: the old reality cannot be saved, so he will build a new one.
Battleworld might then be his final experiment; a reality made from the debris of many others and governed by his vision. This is where ‘Age of Ultron’ is surprisingly relevant again. It wasn’t only an AI attempting to take down the Avengers. It brought in the concept of trying to “save” a broken world, and then making something worse.
The MCU has taken that concept further than Sokovia, however, and has extended it to the multiverse. While Ultron attempted to break the cycle by destruction, Doom might attempt to finish it off by control. And if ‘Secret Wars’ follows the spirit of the comics, that difference could be everything.
