Recently, Marvel announced a Disney+ series for Wonder Man.
Wonder Man is not a very famous name in Marvel Cinematic Universe like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, or Hulk. Who is Wonder Man?
Wonder Man aka Simon Williams is a villain turned superhero. The character first made his debut in comic books in the year 1964 and is a long-standing character. The character’s initial introduction was as a supervillain imbued with “ionic” energy. His first appearance was in the ‘Avengers 9’. Originally from a rich family, he struggles to keep his company afloat due to its main competitor Stark Industries.
His task is to infiltrate the Avengers as instructed by master villain Baron Heinrich Zemo. After he received his superpowers, Zemo told him that he will die without the serum only he can provide. Even after luring the Avengers into a trap he decides to save them. His body enters a catatonic state as it adjusts to the effects of the treatment.
Eventually, Wonder Man returns and becomes a part of the Avengers. He suffers from slight claustrophobia and a fear of dying in battle after his resurrection. But, Wonder Man finally overcomes his fear of death during the final battle with Korvac. He also becomes the founder of the West Coast Avengers.
He has strong ties with the characters of Vision and Wanda Maximoff. It all started after the use of his brain waves by Ultron in the creation of the Vision. The character of Wonder Man previously came extremely close to making a cameo appearance with Nathan Fillion posing as Simon Williams on a bunch of fake movie posters for a deleted scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
What Are His Powers And Abilities?
Wonder Man originally gained his superhuman powers due to chemical and radiation treatments with “ionic” energy by Baron Zemo. He has amazing abilities like flight, immortality, virtual invulnerability, superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, and reflexes.
That is not all as he also has healing factor, ionic energy manipulation, power recycling, electromagnetic manipulation, energy-enhanced strike, enhanced vision, and hearing. Last but not least some more abilities left on the list are size alteration, shapeshifting, self-sustenance, and teleportation.
Who Is His Romantic Connection?
Apparently, Wonder Man sparked romance with ‘Ms. Marvel’ and started dating her. They both are a part of Mighty Avengers. The Mighty Avenger used her powers as a leader to keep him away from dangerous situations. But, he didn’t like that. He ends up confronting her on the matter telling her not to keep him out of risky battles just because both of them were dating.
Which Teams Is Wonder Man Affiliated To?
As we all know the Marvel Cinematic Universe comprises many teams and all of the characters are interconnected. The villain turned superhero is affiliated with a few of such teams. He first became a part of the Avengers. He is the founding member of West Coast Avengers.
The hero became a part of S.H.I.E.L.D after the blackmailing incident during the Civil War storyline and also joined Mighty Avengers. He then went on to be a part of Lethal Legion to keep the group from hurting innocent people. Wonder Man even formed Revengers to stop the Avengers as according to him they do More harm than good. Who Is The Showrunner Of The Wonder Man?
After directing the hit film ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Marvel has high hopes from director Destin Daniel Cretton. They want him to continue his amazing work. Cretton is already directing the Shang-Chi sequel which the fans are eagerly waiting for. He is going to be the executive producer of Wonder Man in Disney+. Marvel hopes that Cretton will turn this one into an absolute hit too.
The character is originally created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck, Simon Williams. Andrew Guest will be the showrunner. Responsible for hits like ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, and ‘30 Rock’, he will also write the show.
When Will The Filming Start And Who Will Play The Lead?
Marvel has made no announcement of when the filming for the series will start. According to some sources, the filming is likely to start at some point in 2023. As for who might play Simon Williams is still unknown. But there are some speculations that it can be Evans Peter.
An inside source of Marvel already said that they are not yet done with the actor. And seeing as Wonder Man has a strong bond with Wanda and Vision in the comics, it would make sense if the character came back after first appearing in ‘WandaVision’.
According to some sources, “It would require a bit of careful narrative finagling, but it feels like Marvel could potentially pull it off.”
