Marvel is preparing to pass the Black Panther mantle to a new generation, and Angela Bassett’s reaction suggests the franchise has found someone she believes can carry that legacy forward.
Following the confirmation that David Jonsson will play an adult Toussaint, the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, Bassett openly celebrated the casting.
Angela Bassett Gives David Jonsson Her Approval
The actress, who played Queen Ramonda in the first two Black Panther movies, was asked about Jonsson’s casting during a red carpet interview. Rather than offering a cautious response, Bassett made it clear that she was genuinely excited about the decision.

“Ooh, come with it! I cannot wait. I was so over the moon to hear that, as a fan. I know the fans were happy as well. It’s exciting!” She also gave Jonsson a direct vote of confidence when asked whether he had her approval. “Yes, he does!” Bassett said.
It may be a short reaction, but it carries some extra weight considering Bassett’s connection to the Wakandan story. Queen Ramonda was one of the emotional anchors of the first two films, and her character’s relationship with T’Challa helped define the family at the center of the franchise.
Jonsson now has the difficult task of stepping into a legacy that was shaped so strongly by Boseman. But Marvel is not simply recasting T’Challa. Instead, it is moving the story forward through his son.
Marvel Is Turning Toussaint Into Black Panther’s Future
Ryan Coogler previously revealed that the third movie will show Toussaint growing up and coming of age. That creates a major opportunity for the next film to explore a very different version of Wakanda. The character was only a child when audiences last saw him in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

By the time ‘Black Panther 3’ arrives in December 2028, he will apparently be old enough to take on a much larger role. That also means ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ could become an important bridge between the two versions of the character.
With Marvel describing the post-’Secret Wars’ era as a reset rather than a complete reboot, the franchise has a natural way to move Toussaint into adulthood. For Jonsson, it is a huge responsibility. For Marvel, it is an even bigger gamble: continuing Black Panther without simply trying to recreate what came before.
