On the surface, ‘Lanterns’ seems to be a straightforward murder mystery: John Stewart must solve the murder of Hal Jordan. But Episode 6 continues to build upon the story, making it even more bizarre than a simple investigation.
Hal Was Clearly Hiding Something
The show’s timeline is initially confusing. Hal’s death is depicted with snow on Rushville, and John comes back later to attend his funeral without the snow. It’s a continuity error until the episode makes it clear that the story has moved about a decade forward. It’s a reminder that the mystery is set over a much longer period of time.

Then, there’s Hal’s locked vault. The storage facility apparently needs Hal’s voice to open; even a recording of his voice will not suffice. Whatever he left behind was clearly protected for a reason.
The Ring Could Finally Tell John The Truth
The biggest development may be John’s decision to dig up Hal’s grave and take his Green Lantern ring. Rather than bringing Hal back to life, the ring generates a Halogram, essentially a ring-created version of Hal that could potentially preserve information about his final investigation.

That’s an intriguing new direction for Lanterns. John isn’t simply looking for the person who pulled the trigger. He might be working to piece together the last days of Hal’s life, and what the old Lantern found before he was silenced.
And honestly, that’s what makes this mystery so compelling. The question isn’t just who killed Hal Jordan. It’s what Hal discovered that made his death necessary.
