One of the biggest questions surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is how Marvel plans to separate the character from the actor’s iconic history as Tony Stark. One intriguing theory is that it might be a classic Doctor Doom story about consciousness transfer.
The MCU could potentially have their connection be part of the story itself instead of Doom being just a Tony Stark lookalike. It may sound like a crazy concept, but Marvel already has a version of this concept.
Doom Could Have Stolen Tony Stark’s Body

Doctor Doom has employed the Ovoid Mind-Transfer in Marvel Comics, a method that enables the transfer of the mind from one body to another. A well-known example is when Doom’s body is destroyed, and his mind is transferred to another person.

There’s already something in the MCU that could do the same thing. Dreamwalking was introduced in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, which enabled a person’s mind to wander through the multiverse and enter a different body.
That leads to a really interesting ‘Avengers Doomsday’ theory: what if Doom’s body was destroyed before he even got to the main MCU timeline, forcing him to dreamwalk into Tony Stark’s body? Then, the casting of Downey is no longer a surprise.
The Mysterious Hammering Could Be Doom Rebuilding Himself

This theory also provides a potentially interesting explanation of the hammering sounds in ‘Endgame Encore’. The sound isn’t just a reference to Tony Stark; it can also be a reference to Doom building his iconic armor and mask in a body that’s not his.

It would also account for the fact that Marvel might be using different versions of Doom’s armor in the upcoming films. If Doom ever does get his original form, his appearance may be vastly different after ‘Doomsday’.
The biggest twist, however, could come in ‘Secret Wars’. If Doom is God Emperor Doom and is controlling Battleworld, then he could restore or recreate people that were lost, and Tony Stark could exist without Doom once again.
That would make Downey’s return a rather emotional conclusion: Tony and Doom could start linked in one body and then Battleworld would finally sever their ties. If Marvel does take this step, it will certainly be more in-depth than just putting a familiar face behind a new mask.
