Dormammu Likely To Return As The Formidable Old Villain In ‘Doctor Strange 3’, But With A New Twist

Among the many faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Doctor Strange played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Released nearly two years ago, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ left fans with the thrill of another excellent superhero to look forward to, but also with lingering questions about the character’s future in the MCU.

Though there are widespread rumors about the return of Doctor Strange in a potential third installment of the film, the MCU has not confirmed anything yet. However, a new rumor suggests that along with the protagonist, the infamous antagonist, Dormammu, also has heavy scope for a return.

While an alternative version of Doctor Strange made a brief appearance in ‘What If…?Season 2, it seems unlikely that this variant would appear on our screens anytime soon. Meanwhile, the possibility of a third ‘Doctor Strange‘ film is high although nothing is official.

Hints dropped by Kevin Feige at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con suggested that there’s plenty of room in the release schedule for Phase 6 projects. However, given the MCU’s evolving direction over the past several months, it’s hard to say how much of this remains true, and also the scope for Doctpr Strange’s return.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, the rumor mill is abuzz with reports from Marvel Updates suggesting that ‘Doctor Strange 3‘ is indeed in development. According to these whispers, the studio also has big plans for Dormammu, the formidable villain from the first ‘Doctor Strange‘ film.

In the upcoming installment, Dormammu is set to return in a new form, and Clea’s backstory will be explored in greater detail, reports suggest.

With the return of ‘Doctor Strange‘ anticipated highly,  Marvel Studios also reportedly aims to bring back Sam Raimi to direct the film. The production is reportedly slated to start in 2025. However, the news cannot be taken without a grain of salt, especially considering Benedict Cumberbatch’s recent comments about his uncertain future in the MCU.

“We will see. We will find out,” Cumberbatch recently said. “I’m not sure where he’s been and what he’s been up to and who with, but yeah, I know as little as you.”

Adding to the speculation, Raimi is rumored to direct at least two more projects for Marvel, further muddying the waters around the certainty of his involvement in ‘Doctor Strange 3‘. As always with the MCU, fans are left to sift through rumors and await official announcements.
