As the world gears up for 2024, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its own plans for a fresh start. Though the production has recently faced some disheartening failures at the box office, it seems Marvel has now decided that it would make all the necessary moves to bring in a change with their upcoming show ‘Echo‘.

‘Echo’ Is About “Exploring The Definition Of A Family”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Freeland indicated that Marvel is making some bold moves, attempting to pull off something that has never been done before. “People say it’s all been done before, but there’s a set piece in the second episode that I can honestly say has never been seen before on film,” Freeland said.

Echo‘ will star Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, reprising her role from the 2021 Disney+ series ‘Hawkeye’. On the show, Maya Lopez’s journey would take the center stage, with aspects such as her family and Native American community being the main aspects of its narrative.

Director Freeland said that a a big part of ideas for ‘Echo‘ have come “from our collaboration with the Choctaw Nation.” The production has worked closely with the Choctaw Nation to pull off an authentic portrayal of Choctaw history and culture.

It’s all going to be about exploring the definition of family. What does it mean to be related to somebody?” Freeland explained.

Director Freeland Has Adopted A Grounded Approach Unlike Recent Marvel Misfires

From the looks of it, the series seems to distinguish itself from the recent Marvel misfires by adopting a more grounded approach. The story would seemingly have a street-level narrative approach and an intense, visceral action.

Freeland described Maya Lopez’s character as a rogue, free-willed woman who can take on the world, seemingly for the love of her family in this narrative. “She’s a criminal and she’s a villain, she’s killing people. And the response was, ‘Yeah, let’s try it!’”Freeland said.

Alaqua Cox will be playing the lead role on the show after she made her screen debut in ‘Hawkeye‘. Freeland has said she is immensely proud of how well Cox has performed, especially with the emotional depth she brought to the table, which acted as the “beating heart” of the show.

Freeland also hinted at exploring Maya’s complex character further, as the show progresses. “She’s a villain in Hawkeye, and to me, that’s the most interesting thing about her. Let’s lean into that, let’s explore that,” the director said.

Echo‘ is set to premiere on January 9 on Disney+ and Hulu. Let’s see what Marvel has to serve for starters to its fans in the coming year!
