Mahershala Ali has opened up about the long and frustrating road to Marvel’s ‘Blade’, and his comments make it clear just how much the cancelled project affected him personally.
The Oscar-winning actor spent years attached to the role, trained extensively for the part, and even moved his family to Atlanta while waiting for production to move forward. So, even his harsh comments are understandable.

What makes his latest comments especially interesting is that Ali agrees with Kevin Feige’s own harsh assessment of the situation. But despite everything he lost along the way, the actor now sees an unexpected positive side to Blade never happening.

Ali revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously described himself as feeling like a “giant loser and failure” over his inability to get Blade off the ground. Ali didn’t exactly disagree. “I agree with him 100%; he should feel that way,” Ali said.
The actor explained just how much preparation went into a movie that ultimately never reached production. He spent more than a year training, including extensive sword work, and pushed himself so hard that he suffered a knee injury.
His commitment went beyond physical preparation. Ali also moved his family to Atlanta because production was supposed to begin there. Instead, the project repeatedly faced delays, leaving him stuck in an unusual holding pattern.
“I turned down roles because they owned my schedule,” Ali explained. That detail makes the situation feel even more frustrating. Ali wasn’t simply waiting for a Marvel movie to happen. He was organizing his career and personal life around it.
Not Making ‘Blade’ Ultimately Led To ‘Your Mother’
Yet Ali doesn’t sound bitter about where things ended up. In fact, he now looks at the failed Blade production from a completely different perspective. “How I’m feeling in the moment is I’m actually grateful it didn’t happen because then I wouldn’t have been able to make Your Mother,” he said.

That’s probably the most revealing part of Ali’s comments. After years of uncertainty, injuries, schedule conflicts, and repeated delays, the actor found a way to view the experience as something that ultimately opened another door.
For Marvel, however, ‘Blade’ remains one of the studio’s most complicated unrealized projects. And honestly, after hearing how much Ali invested in the role, it’s hard not to wonder what that version of Blade might have looked like.
