Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney and Emma Roberts starrer ‘Madame Web’ saw considerable failure at the box office followed by an intense hate train against the film which many labelled as poorly made and an unnecessary addition to the MCU.
While Johnson has spoken up about the film’s failure and how she will never pick up a similar project, Emma Roberts had a completely opposite reaction as she expressed her interest in making something similar again. Here’s why she thinks the internet is to be blamed for ‘Madame Web’s failure.
Why Emma Roberts Thinks Internet Is The Reason Why ‘Madame Web’ Flopped
Emma Roberts doesn’t share similar opinions as her co-stars when it comes to the negative performance of ‘Madame Web’ commercially and critically. The actress talked to Variety about how she really enjoyed making the film and how if it wasn’t for the internet, the film would have done really well.
The actress said, “I personally really loved ‘Madame Web’. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie. If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.”
She also talked about how producing films has given her a different take on films and what goes into their making as she said, “That’s why when people are so quick to see a movie or a show and they’re like, “Oh, I hate that,” I’m like, “That was months and years and blood, sweat, tears.” Producing stuff has made me realize you can’t really hate anything because it means that people have really, really, really tried and succeeded. If you’re watching something then that’s a success.”

The film revolves around Cassandra “Cassie” Webb (Johnson), a young paramedic, who begins to develop clairvoyant abilities. She inherited the powers genetically after her mother was bitten by a spider. She is first a reluctant hero, but she quickly finds herself compelled to save three young ladies from a mysterious villain .
The film’s poor editing, awkward storyline, and boring action scenes were uniformly criticized by critics and had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 11%. Apart from that, the film was also heavily criticized on social media because of its dreadful presence and lousy dialogue.
