One of the most recognizable mutant characters from the original X-Men movies, Rebecca Romijn will be back as Mystique in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. However, according to reports, Romijn had three big concerns before she agreed to step into the blue makeup after 22 years.
Rebecca Romijn Accepted Mystique Without The Brutal Makeup Process

Telling Mystique’s story wasn’t just about showing up on set and wearing a costume. It was a grueling process, which could take hours before Romijn was ready to shoot. This time, however, Marvel had to deliver a completely different experience, according to Filmified Guy.

Romijn’s biggest problem was the makeup. In the original X-Men films, it took between seven and 12 hours to become Mystique, depending on the production. About 75% of her body had to be covered, and after that, if she wanted to take anything off, it could take even longer.
When Marvel approached her about ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, her first question was reportedly about that. Romijn wanted the process to be much simpler. When you consider the original transformation was quite a task, it makes sense.
It’s not exactly a glamorous part of getting ready to return to a beloved superhero role to spend a large portion of a workday in prosthetics and makeup. Romijn has previously spoken about just how complicated the process might be, so her concern is understandable.
A New Mystique Process Changed Everything

The most significant difference seems to be that Marvel’s transformation of ‘Doomsday’ was a lot less intense. The production is said to have gone about something other than recreating the process of the original trilogy. That was enough to get Romijn back.

Romijn obviously didn’t wish to have the same physically demanding routine after over 20 years. Now, fans will have the opportunity to see her as Mystique again, without Romijn having to give up nearly an entire day to become the character.
The return is already a big ‘Doomsday’ reunion, but the backstory is even more intriguing. Sometimes bringing an old character back is not about convincing the actor to return. It is about convincing them that the experience has finally changed.
