For years, fans have been wondering whether Robert Downey Jr. would don Sherlock Holmes’ iconic coat again. The fate of ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ has been uncertain for over 10 years, with delays, changing schedules, and industry setbacks.

Now, a hopeful update has emerged for the long-time fans.

While the sequel still hasn’t entered production, new comments from writer Chris Brancato suggest the project is far from abandoned. In fact, the screenplay is already written, meaning the biggest obstacle may no longer be the story itself. Brancato announced that he had written a draft of the script for ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’.

Co-writer Michael Panes even gave praise to the script. However, it’s not certain that audiences will be able to see the film, as there are factors out of the writers’ control. “Well, I don’t know, that’s up to the movie gods. Also, Robert’s schedule. Robert has a very, very busy schedule, so I’m hopeful that it will get made. But you know, we have to wait and see how things shake out. You just never know with movies,” he told The Direct.

Downey has been incredibly busy since the release of ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ in 2011, having gone on to win an Oscar for his performance in ‘Oppenheimer’ and his return to the MCU as Doctor Doom.

One positive aspect of the delay is that no one has indicated that the project has been cancelled. Earlier reports said the script has been revised many times over the years to make it live up to the expectations of both Downey and producer Susan Downey.

However, there has been interest in making the third film many times over the years. Such patience can be a blessing in disguise for the sequel. Instead of haste for another film, the creative team seems intent on delivering a mystery worthy of the beloved detective, and the chemistry between Downey and Jude Law has been one of the franchise’s biggest strengths.

For now, fans will have to wait a bit longer before they can see Sherlock Holmes on the big screen again. Downey’s obligations for future Marvel movies make it unlikely that production will start right away. Yet, it’s a significant achievement to have a script that’s finished, after almost 15 years of development limbo.
