He went on to say, “I’m always aghast when I hear anyone who has any notoriety at all talk about why they can’t do A, B, C, or D anymore. I go, are you bragging about your victimhood of, like, being favored by, you know, luck and fortune and talent? Just f—ing shut up.

Downey Jr. suggested that some celebrities lose perspective when discussing the drawbacks of being famous. In his view, success often comes with sacrifices, but that does not justify constantly presenting oneself as a victim.

His remarks set the tone for a wider discussion about modern fame, celebrity culture, and how public recognition has changed over the years. From there, the actor turned his attention to the rise of influencers and the different paths people now take to become famous.

In the late ’70s, early ’80s, dangerous though it was, there was this sense that the competition wasn’t so stiff that you shouldn’t even bother trying,” Downey Jr. said. “Whereas nowadays, people can create a celebrity without ever doing much besides rolling a phone in front of themselves.”

Although he said he does not view this change as entirely negative, he believes it has made it harder for younger people to stand out through real accomplishments. Instead of chasing online popularity, he hopes more young people will focus on building skills, creating things, and educating themselves.

Hopefully, the grosser part of our youth is going to say, ‘Yeah, but that’s not my thing. I want to go do something... want to make somethingwant to build something. I want to educate myself,’” he said.

Downey Jr. also dismissed the idea that influencers will become the entertainment industry’s next generation of major stars. “When I hear people talk about, ‘Oh, the stars of the future are going to be influencers,’ I go, ‘I don’t know what world you’re living into, but I think that that is absolute horses—.’”
