Russo Brothers Confirm Back-to-Back Filming For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ And ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to enter its next big phase, and fans couldn’t be more excited. Now, the force behind the films, the Russo Brothers, who previously directed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, confirmed that the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will be shot back-to-back.

While that alone is big news, the directing duo also teased some major surprises that will “challenge audiences” in ways they haven’t seen before.

While attending the premiere of their new Netflix film, the Russo Brothers were asked about their return to Marvel Studios. Joe Russo, while talking to THR, revealed that the two Avengers films will be shot “fairly back-to-back.” Additionally, the director confirmed the production will kick off this April in London.

He acknowledged the massive undertaking, joking, “It’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see.” However, this kind of workload is nothing new for the Russos. They previously helmed the Infinity Saga, which was filmed almost consecutively and delivered some of the biggest moments in the MCU’s history.

However, this time, they seem particularly intrigued by the story they’ve crafted. “We found a way into the story that we think is gonna be challenging for audiences,” Joe explained. “It’s challenging for us to execute. And it’s really exciting for us, it gets us out of bed to do it.

Of course, no discussion about ‘Secret Wars’ or ‘Doomsday’ would be complete without speculation on which characters will appear. Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the full arrival of the X-Men into the MCU. Moreover, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ marked the beginning of the mutant era.

When asked if Deadpool, Wolverine, or X-Men characters could appear in these movies, Joe played coy. “Who knows? I don’t know, I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know,” he told Deadline. Whereas, Anthony jokingly added, “If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want. Whoever tickles your fancy.”

That’s far from a confirmation. However, it does suggest that Marvel is keeping some major secrets under wraps. Additionally, the entire Secret Wars storyline in the comics involves heroes and villains from different universes colliding. So, it would almost be a shock if the X-Men didn’t make an appearance.

Interestingly, Joe Russo also addressed the rumors about Doctor Doom, who many assumed would simply be a replacement for Kang the Conqueror after Jonathan Majors‘ departure from the MCU. “Both movies have been completely rewritten,” he clarified, adding that Doom hasn’t just been inserted into Kang’s place.
