Hulk’s appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ apparently wasn’t the result of Marvel simply wanting another familiar face on the poster. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has stated that Bruce Banner and his green alter-ego were only added because the character was a good fit for the story.
Hulk’s ‘Brand New Day’ Role Was More Important Than You Think
Cretton said that he explicitly asked for Hulk, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige eventually permitted them to use him. “It made sense for our movie to have Hulk. We had to request it, and Kevin Feige let us do it.” That’s significant because it indicates that the Hulk isn’t being used as a prop to make headlines.
And that also makes him a lot more interesting. Post ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Peter Parker is in a completely different world. He has lost the people he cherished and is living a lonely life without anyone knowing who he is. That loneliness might lead Peter into darker waters and make Hulk a surprisingly good companion.

While Bruce Banner and Peter Parker are two very different heroes, they have one thing in common: both are grappling with an extraordinary power that can prove to be difficult to control. That means Banner is more than just another Avenger that’s showing up in Peter’s next adventure.

He might have been a lesson on the dangers of letting the monster get out of control. Peter has always been trying to find a balance between being Spider-Man and Peter Parker. However, with all he has been through, that equilibrium may be harder to maintain. When Hulk’s anger begins to affect his decisions, Banner’s experience becomes even more applicable.
Rather than simply asking, “What if Spider-Man becomes more powerful?” the story can ask something much more personal: What if Peter loses control of who he is? That gives Hulk a real dramatic role. The crossover also seems more purposeful, thanks to Cretton’s remarks.
The director was not just handed a list of characters that Marvel wanted to have in the film. He reportedly asked for Hulk because the character belonged in the movie he was trying to make, and Feige agreed. While ‘Brand New Day’ delved into the darker side of Peter, Hulk became one of the most significant characters in the narrative as well as another familiar Marvel face.
