If new reports are true, then Steve Rogers may be facing one of his most heart-wrenching decisions in the upcoming Avengers saga. The leak claims that the final confrontation will be between Captain America, Doctor Doom, Thor and Reed Richards, with Captain America taking the final shot at Doom.
However, Steve apparently won’t kill him.
Steve Rogers Refuses To Become What He Hates
The decision may be especially significant, as the war is apparently personal. In ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘, it is rumored that Doom kills Steve’s son James Rogers. So, revenge feels like the only possible option. Steve has every reason to want Doom dead. However, the storyline that’s reported is a much tougher one: forgiveness.

The final battle is supposedly between Steve, Thor, and Reed Richards and Doom, with the rest of the Avengers taking on Doom’s allies and the Latverian witches. Steve is apparently the one who finally defeats Doom. Thor then attempts to finish the job using Zeus’ Thunderbolt, but Steve reportedly intervenes and stops him.
This moment may be one of the most memorable in the entire story. Steve isn’t necessarily being merciless to Doom; he thinks Doom deserves forgiveness. He might just know that taking revenge by killing someone will not make up for the loss of his family.
Steve has spent his entire heroic life fighting against people who believe power gives them the right to decide who lives and dies. Taking on the role of Captain America requires a set of principles, and killing Doom in anger may mean abandoning them. That’s why it’s a difficult decision.
Doom’s Survival Could Change MCU’s Future
Also, Doom’s story has a surprisingly significant future in Secret Wars. Instead of being killed in the final battle, he survives and is still somewhere in the MCU, possibly to come back for a future battle with characters like Knull or the Beyonder.

It might make Steve’s decision even more important. Imagine defeating the person responsible for your son’s death and still choosing not to become an executioner. Steve wouldn’t be forgetting James. He would be refusing to let Doom’s actions dictate who he becomes.
It would also form a very interesting dynamic between the two characters. For Doom, Steve’s mercy might be a sign of his weakness, and for Steve, it may be a sign of his strength.
There’s no official confirmation of this ending, but if that’s indeed what Marvel plans to do, then the biggest win for Steve Rogers might not be over Doctor Doom. It may be proving that even after losing everything, he can still choose to be true to himself.
