The moment Marvel Studios announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning as Doctor Doom, there was a lot of excitement and a very valid question that came to mind: was Marvel actually introducing Victor von Doom, or was it simply turning Iron Man into another version of a famous villain?
That concern has shrunk significantly since the new footage and information about ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
Victor Von Doom Already Has A History With The Fantastic Four In The MCU
Instead of making Doom feel like Tony Stark wearing a different mask, Marvel appears to be giving him his own history, motivations, and connection to the Fantastic Four. It would have been easy to turn Doctor Doom into an Iron Man variant. Thankfully, everything revealed so far suggests Marvel understands that Doom is more than just that.

One of the most obvious of all the clues is the connection between Doom and the Fantastic Four. In the clips, Sue Storm says that Victor was once brilliant, kind, and caring, but lost it all. Reed Richards also faces Doom and calls him “Victor,” suggesting that this isn’t some random villain who has suddenly appeared from another universe.
There could obviously still be a twist. The MCU is a fan of its surprises. Even if Doom’s true history with the Fantastic Four is more complicated, it’s good to know that they at least have some history. That’s particularly crucial as Reed Richards and Victor von Doom have one of the most iconic rivalries in Marvel Comics.
Their fight isn’t just about strength. It is based on intelligence, self-interest, resentment, and fundamentally opposing views of the world’s governance. That relationship finally seems to be getting some attention from Marvel.
RDJ’s Iron Man Connection Could Actually Make Doom More Interesting
The best hope is that Marvel isn’t simply ignoring the legacy of Downey’s Iron Man, but playing with it. The Avengers of Earth-616 will surely respond to the sight of Tony Stark’s face on their biggest new enemy. That emotional baggage might make Doom more disturbing without making him Tony Stark.

And that contrast might be the point. Victor can be completely his own character while still forcing the Avengers to confront memories of the man who sacrificed himself to save the universe. And if Doom deliberately exploits that resemblance, it could create some genuinely uncomfortable moments.
The main concern overall has been that RDJ’s casting would overshadow Doctor Doom’s persona. The latest indications suggest otherwise. He doesn’t have to be Iron Man. He only needs to be Victor von Doom, and so far, Marvel gets that.
