‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is widely considered one of the best films by Marvel, helmed by Taika Waititi. It earned around $853 million at the worldwide box office. Waititi also returned to direct ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ which was criticized for its bland humor, yet stood strong at $760 million box-office collection worldwide.
However, Waititi’s journey with Marvel ends here, as the director expressed his lack of interest in directing more Marvel films.
Taika Waititi Reveals Why He Directed Thor Movies
During an episode of the SmartLess podcast, Taika Waititi revealed that he had no interest in remaining a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe anymore after directing ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. Waititi said, “You know what? I had no interest in doing one of those films.” He said that the only reason he accepted Ragnarok was for the money as he just had his second child. The director added, “It wasn’t on my plan for my career as an auteur. But I was poor and I’d just had a second child, and I thought, You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.”
The director was further asked if Marvel executives were scared to bring him in to which Waititi answered, “I think there was no place left for them to go with that. I thought, ‘Well, they’ve called me in, this is really the bottom of the barrel.” While the topic of ‘Thor 5’ rose, he said, “I know that I won’t be involved. I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for … But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris.”

Taika Waititi Feels Thor Is Overrated
The ‘Thor’ director also spoke about his true feelings towards Thor. Taika Waititi said, “Thor, let’s face it — it was probably the least popular franchise. I never read Thor comics as a kid. That was the comic I’d pick up and be like Ugh. And then I did some research on it, and I read one Thor comic or 18 pages, or however long they are. I was still baffled by this character.”
Waititi further said that he wouldn’t mind if Marvel brought in another director for Thor. The ‘Jojo Rabbit’ director said, “I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”
