If you have ever found Nick Fury fascinating, what we’re about to say next will hit differently. Before Samuel L. Jackson became the iconic leather-clad eye-patch Marvel leader, there was another Hollywood titan in the talks.
Yes, we are talking about George Clooney and a version of Nick Fury you may have never imagined. He wasn’t the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. or the founder of the Avengers, but something quietly perverse.
George Clooney Walked Away From Nick Fury After Comic Discovery

Back when ‘Iron Man‘ was released under the direction of Jon Favreau, Nick Fury’s post-credits appearance felt like a clever addition rather than a long-term plan. At that stage, the character had not yet become central to a larger universe.

Even so, Nick Fury soon turned into a key figure as the films progressed. Samuel L. Jackson brought a commanding presence to the role, connecting multiple heroes across different storylines. Before that casting became final, George Clooney had reportedly been considered for the same part, according to the creators of the hit comic series ‘The Boys.’
As part of his preparation, he explored Nick Fury’s comic history. That process led him to a version of the character that offered a far more intense, graphic portrayal than expected.
A Violent Nick Fury Comic That Became The Turning Point

During his research, Clooney found the comic ‘Fury‘. This series, created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, revealed a much darker, more violent side of Nick Fury.
The comic did not hold back. One scene, in particular, stood out. Nick Fury kills a man by strangling him using his own entrails. That moment alone shows how graphic the story gets. On top of that, the comic uses strong language throughout, which adds to its mature tone.

As a result, concerns reportedly arose. According to ‘Marvel Comics: The Untold Story‘, Clooney and his team started questioning whether taking on such a character would be the right move. It is not fully clear whether Clooney himself felt uneasy or if his publicist raised the concern, but in the end, he decided to step away.
After Clooney stepped away, Marvel cast Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. That decision worked out perfectly, as Jackson went on to become one of the most important figures in the MCU.
At the same time, the comic series ‘The Ultimates‘ had already introduced a version of Nick Fury that looked very similar to Jackson. Because of that, his casting felt like a natural choice.
