With the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, there is one big question: why does Victor von Doom look exactly like Tony Stark? It’s possible that Marvel is just going to use the same actor for a completely different role.
However, with the multiverse that the MCU has developed, there are some intriguing undertones to that resemblance.
Doom Could Be Using Tony’s Face Against The Avengers
The easiest explanation could also be the most psychologically brutal. Victor is completely separate from Tony Stark, but discovers that the Avengers’ greatest fallen hero has his face. Doom could exploit that resemblance as a weapon instead of pretending to be Tony.

Whenever Steve Rogers, Thor, or other Avengers glance at him, they would be forced to see someone they loved and lost. The hesitation may be a massive advantage for Doom. But there are two more complicated possibilities.
Victor might be Tony’s biological brother, Arno Stark, who was separated from the Stark family and later adopted by the von Dooms. He would still be Victor von Doom, but he could be Tony’s alter-ego, which would also provide Doom with a personal motivation to know the Avengers.
Then there’s the wildest theory: Tony’s consciousness somehow ended up inside Victor after the Snap. In the MCU, Tony would still be dead, but the power of the Infinity Stones might have carried over some of his consciousness to another universe.
Sue’s Warning May Be the Biggest Hint
These theories could mean a very different thing when Sue Storm’s comments about Victor being “a good man” before are taken into account. Imagine Doom carrying Tony Stark’s memories while living as Victor. His feelings for Sue could then clash with memories of Pepper, creating an identity crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in the MCU.

Tony’s physical anguish following the use of the Infinity Stones could be linked to even Doom’s damaged face. But if Franklin Richards has enough power to change reality, the moment of restoring Doom’s face might be a devastating one.
There’s an ominous tie-in to ‘Age of Ultron’, too. Tony’s attempt to save everyone could ultimately destroy him, as Wanda warned him. Maybe that warning wasn’t about Tony dying. Maybe it was about Tony becoming something he could no longer recognize.
