While accepting his award, Robert Downey Jr. thanked the cast and crew and talked about how much the role meant to him, a statement that many thought was a subtle dig at Marvel.

He said, “Emily, Cillian, Matt… it was fantastic and I stand here before you a better man because of it. You know, what we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important” thanking the cast and crew of his film, while the ‘important’ remarked was noted by many as a subtle shade at Marvel, as a comparison on his side between important films like ‘Oppenheimer’ and unimportant films like ‘Avengers’.

He then said, “Here’s my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me”

This statement was taken by many fans as his reluctance to return to his Marvel roots.

Downey took home the award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at the 2024 Oscars and gave out a heartfelt but hilarious speech that earned the applause of everyone. Even a dog in attendance.

He began, “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy — in that order. I’d like to thank my veterinarian — I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here”

After thanking his co stars and how much the film meant to him, Downey talked about the critical comments he had received throughout his career and said, “I was thinking this morning: I love critics. They’ve given me such beautiful feedback, really just so many great moments, and some of it is so poetic, I just want to share some of their thoughts with you over the years.”

“The first one is kind of like haiku: ‘Sloppy, messy and lazy,’” he continued, “The next one is more metaphoric: ‘Like Pee-wee Herman emerging from a coma.’ This was from a Brit: ‘A puzzling waste of talent.’ And lastly, and this one lingered: ‘Amusing as a bed-locked fart.’”
