For years, Marvel fans have eagerly anticipated the moment Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man finally dons the iconic black symbiote suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, Holland has admitted that the biggest problem is not the concept; it’s getting the suit to look right on screen.

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Holland talked about almost 10 years of playing Peter Parker. As expected, the conversation eventually shifted to one of the most requested moments in Spider-Man’s future: the arrival of the symbiote.

Instead of just teasing fans, Holland showed the creative process behind making the iconic suit come to life. It wasn’t as easy to bring the symbiote suit to life. “They did it so well in the game, and I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar without having a CG component,” Holland confessed.

The suit’s ever-changing, organic look would unsurprisingly take a lot of computer-generated effects. The balance between practical costume work and CGI is something Marvel will need to figure out to make the suit look believable on the big screen.

His comments also highlight how audience expectations have changed over the years. Since the black suit last appeared in 2007’s ‘SpiderMan 3’, visual effects technology and fan expectations have evolved dramatically. Delivering a version that satisfies modern audiences is no small task.

But while Holland couldn’t say when the black suit will finally make its appearance, Marvel Studios hasn’t ruled out the storyline. In the same podcast, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal also discussed Spider-Man’s future with Venom.

They were both hopeful, saying that fans should keep their faith alive. Yet, they gave no details of any plans. Holland has echoed a similar message throughout the ‘Brand New Day’ promotional tour, previously telling fans that he couldn’t promise the symbiote would appear in the latest film.

Still, he believes it will happen eventually. Holland’s candor is welcome to longtime fans of Spider-Man. Rather than tease out a plot, he admitted that one of Marvel’s most anticipated stories has its real challenges in the filmmaking process.
