Spider-Man’s emotional farewell in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ remains one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most unforgettable moments. In theaters, audiences were left in awe at the end of the film when Peter Parker desperately says, “I don’t want to go,” to Tony Stark before disappearing.
Now, years later, the line still echoes in fans’ minds. However, Tom Holland has confirmed that the iconic lines in the scene may not have been scripted.
Tom Holland Says The Line That Wasn’t Fully Planned
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Holland spoke about the emotional scene and how it was a result of a combination of improvisation, acting drills, and the camaraderie that was established on set. Holland couldn’t remember all the details when asked if he improvised. However, he thinks that the iconic “I don’t want to go” may have been his in the moment.

“I feel like I maybe gave myself a little too much credit in that moment. It definitely wasn’t written as long as it was on the page. And maybe it was just my insatiable need to milk that moment. But I think the ‘I don’t want to go’ was maybe something that I improvised.”
The actor explained that while the scene existed on the page, it wasn’t nearly as extended as it became during filming. Holland joked that he may have simply been “milking” the emotional moment, repeatedly delivering the line as the cameras rolled.
“Truth be told, an acting exercise that I have done since I was a kid to find real emotion is to repeat a phrase, whether it’s ‘I’m so sorry,’ ‘I don’t want to go,’ or ‘I love you,” he shared. It’s a personal exercise that helped transform an already powerful scene into one that left millions of viewers in tears.

Holland was also quick to credit everyone involved in bringing the moment to life. He called it a “heartbreaking scene” that was a mixture of improvisation, spontaneous reactions from Robert Downey Jr., and direction from Joe and Anthony Russo.

The actors were not bound to the script. They were encouraged to explore the emotions of the scene, and Peter’s fear and Tony Stark’s helplessness played out in a manner that felt very real.

It wasn’t only the shocking conclusion of ‘Infinity War’ that lingered in the minds of audiences; it was the raw humanity of a frightened teenager clinging to life while his mentor, who had always protected him, could do nothing to stop it.
