When ‘Extraction’ debuted on Netflix in 2020, it quickly became one of the platform’s most successful action thrillers, cementing Chris Hemsworth as the perfect choice for the gritty and complex role of Tyler Rake.
However, Hemsworth wasn’t always the intended lead for this explosive franchise. Originally, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was set to star in the adaptation of ‘Ciudad’, now known as ‘Extraction’. So, let’s look into why Johnson was recast and how Hemsworth stepped into the role.
The Russo Brothers’ Marvel Breakthrough Lead To Dwayne Johnson Moving On From ‘Extraction’
Back in 2012, ‘Ciudad’ was announced as a passion project for the Russo Brothers. At the time the brothers were known primarily for their work in television comedies. Dwayne Johnson, fresh off his breakout role in ‘Fast Five’, was attached as the lead. The plan was to create an intense action thriller that would serve as a turning point in the careers of both Johnson and the Russos.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Just as development for ‘Ciudad’ began, Kevin Feige approached the Russo Brothers to direct ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. Recognizing the enormous potential of joining the MCU, the Russos shifted their focus. The success of the film further led to even bigger opportunities.
This included directing ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and the record-shattering ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Meanwhile, their passion project fell by the wayside. Johnson, whose Hollywood stardom was rapidly ascending, couldn’t afford to wait indefinitely. So, he eventually moved on to other major projects.
Chris Hemsworth’s Portrayal Of ‘Thor’ And His Other Action-Packed Roles Made Him The Perfect Fit For ‘Extraction’
When the Russo Brothers finally decided to revive the project, now, as ‘Extraction’ they looked to their Marvel family for inspiration. Joe Russo, who wrote the script for the film, had worked closely with Hemsworth on several MCU films. Additionally, Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor demonstrated his physicality and ability to bring depth to characters.

So, it made him a compelling choice. For the role of Tyler Rake (a broken, grief-stricken mercenary with a dangerous edge), Hemsworth seemed like a perfect fit. Moreover, in addition to the Russo’s the creative team saw Hemsworth as the perfect fit, and the rest is history.
