The Evil Dead franchise has been known to take its fans to the extreme. However, ‘Evil Dead Burn’ sounds like it may have taken things too far, even for the franchise. That’s both thrilling and frightening for horror fans.
‘Evil Dead Burn’ Director Says One Sequence Was ‘Really, Really Hard’ To Watch

One of the most violent scenes had to be taped down before the film’s release, as director Sebastien Vanicek recently announced. The reason? Maintaining the movie’s R rating. Longtime Evil Dead fans will be familiar with buckets of blood and stomach-churning violence.

However, Vanicek said that one scene went too far and could have been given a rare NC-17 rating. When asked about the movie, Vanicek said that there was one scene in ‘Evil Dead Burn’ that was too extreme to make the final cut.
“There is a scene that is not R-rated. It’s a really, really hard scene. And I have to cut it, unfortunately, so you just won’t experience it as brutally as it is right now because I need to have the R-rated movie. So we are trying to find a good balance,” he told Worldofreel.
The filmmaker says the scene will stay in the film, but will not be seen in the same devastating way as it was originally planned. This is a feat for a brand that’s not exactly known for its self-restraint.
The film series has always been graphic and violent, from the infamous tree attack in the original ‘Evil Dead’ to the non-stop carnage of the ‘Evil Dead Rise’. However, even in that bloody heritage, ‘Burn’ apparently had material that was so intense that ratings boards were concerned.
It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes detail that makes people want to know more. Now, horror fans are left wondering just how bad the original version of the sequence was.
Why The R Rating Matters

Some genre fans might want studios to leave the ratings behind. However, there is a practical reason why ‘Evil Dead Burn’ stayed in the R-rated department. The NC-17 rating restricts the audience for a film and can make it harder for it to be released theatrically.

The film, however, has been awarded an R rating, which means that a broader audience of horror fans can enjoy the film without any restrictions. It worked well for ‘Evil Dead Rise’, the 2023 horror film that was a surprise hit at the box office and received positive reviews despite its graphic violence.
‘Burn’ seems to be on a similar trajectory. Fortunately for fans, Vanicek’s remarks imply nothing of the sort; the horror experience won’t be watered down. Quite the opposite. The fact that one scene was cut to avoid an NC-17 rating is a pretty good sign that ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is still quite violent and crazy.
