Florence Pugh’s Nude Scene in ‘Oppenheimer’ Covered Up By CGI Black Dress In India And Few Other Countries

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dropped bombs all over the globe, except for maybe one place. With a non-linear narrative, spine-chilling background score, and an amazing performance by the cast ‘Oppenheimer’ delivered all over an exciting yet horrifying experience. Also, the film is said to be without any CGI, but in some countries that’s not the case.

‘Oppenheimer’ follows the story of The Father of the Atomic Bomb heading the Manhattan Project. Along with that the audience also witnessed the physicist’s personal life and romantic relations with Jean Tatlock. However, fans in India and the Middle East are baffled to know the truth behind an intimate scene between J. Robert Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock.

Florence Pugh’s Nude Scene Censored in India and Other Countries

    Jean Tatlock

Florence Pugh plays Jean Tatlock a communist in Christopher Nolan’s dark historical drama ‘Oppenheimer’. The psychiatrist and Oppenheimer were in a relationship, later engaged in a fair while the physicist was married to Katherine Kitty Puening. However, an intimate moment between the two was censored in several countries outside the US including India, Indonesia, and the Middle East.

The scene takes place as J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the development of the atomic bomb, sits naked across Jean Tatlock, a Communist Party member with whom he had an affair. In the unedited version of the film, Pugh is topless as she is in the middle of a conversation with Murphy’s character in a hotel room. But in the sequence that rolled in Indian and Middle Eastern theaters, her body is covered with a computer-generated black dress.

The creators had to digitally dress Pugh’s character because nudity is forbidden in Indian and Middle Eastern cinema. According to the sources, the edits were made “per usual business practice” for the film to be released in certain territories. Surprisingly ‘Oppenheimer’ isn’t the first time a computer-generated black dress has been designed to cover up exposed skin.

    Eternals

In 2017 Asghar Farhahi’s Oscar win for the movie ‘The Salesman’ was celebrated all over and by Iranian state TV. However, the broadcast by the Iranian Labor News Agency was unhappy with the presenter Charlize Theron’s gold lamé by Christian Dior and gave her CGI black sleeves and a collar to hide her arms and neckline. It does not go unnoticed by the viewers who saw a rather blurry digital wardrobe addition that didn’t consistently move with the actor.

Several countries in the Middle East as well as in Asia have strict censorship regarding nudity, swearing, and sexuality. Recent Disney movies ‘Eternals’ and ‘West Side Story’ have not been released in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia due to the inclusion of a transgender character in the latter and the first openly same-sex couple in the former.
