“I Will Even Be A Janitor, Just Let Me Be In It”: Why Lewis Hamilton Turned Down ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ With Tom Cruise Despite Wanting The Role Badly

Tom Cruise‘s ‘Top Gun‘ series, a thrilling masterpiece has topped the game for action films ever since it came out. Lieutenant Pete Mitchell has been his most memorable character yet- thanks to the franchise. There were, however, talks of another extreme sports star to get featured in the film. We are talking, of course about Lewis Hamilton.

The star of Formula One was given the opportunity to be a pilot in the 2022 follow-up to the 1986 hit film, which starred Tom Cruise. The racing star had to decline the offer though, since filming would have conflicted with his Formula One season, in which he was challenging Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari for the championship title.

Talking about how he regrets not playing the part, Hamilton told Vanity Fair, “Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson. And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it.”

He added that it broke his heart to decline the offer, “And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s… it could’ve been me!” Continuing, he said that he requested he gets cast in the film, saying, “I said, ‘Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2…’ – which had not been spoken of, there was no story yet – ‘I will even be a janitor – just let me be in it’.”

But it didn’t work out as shooting would’ve conflicted with the Formula 1 season, and Hamilton, who is a self-described “perfectionist”, did not want to do the film half-heartedly.

If rumors are to be believed, Tom Cruise starrer ‘Top Gun 3‘ might just be arriving very soon as the actor has apparently been satisfied with a new script for the action sequel

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed to ScreenRant, “It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”
