While speaking about his role in the upcoming thriller ‘Speak No Evil‘, James McAvoy drew comparisons between his character Paddy and the controversial online figure Andrew Tate, often times dubbed as the “king of toxic masculinity“.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McAvoy said “Paddy is living and presenting a version of the good life off-grid on his own time, self-sustaining back to nature, earthy, educated, erudite, sexy.” On the surface, Paddy may follow the ideals that reflect Tate’s teachings, but he was careful to note that “he isn’t just being Andrew Tate. He’s always riding a line“.

According to McAvoy, what separates Paddy from figures like Tate is that he manages to make his brand of masculinity “almost palatable” by putting up a facade of charm and chivalry. Paddy presents himself as a loving family man and hides a well of darkness within him. Tate, on the other hand, wears his controversial views on his sleeve and is more open about them.

James McAvoy, while further speaking about his upcoming film and his character in it, said that he looks at the project as an opportunity to explore more. By more, he meant divisive modern figures that gain attention from many young men.

I thought it played to a lot of these figures that are out there…with this quite uncompromising and quite upsetting and worrying doctrine,” he said, adding that he wishes to examine how it is so easy for people to relate to figures like Paddy.

However, McAvoy also enjoyed portraying how Paddy “enjoys the game” and “enjoys the hunt” in terrifying his guests. Overall, ‘Speak No Evil‘ promises to deliver both scares and important commentary that hooked the actor to the intriguing role of Paddy.
