Jonathan Bennett Gets Real About ‘Mean Girls’ Sequel And His Character Aaron’s Proposed “Gay” Future

It’s been over two decades since audiences fell in love with Aaron Samuels, the charming heartthrob of ‘Mean Girls‘. And while fans often imagine what a sequel might look like, Jonathan Bennett has now shared his thoughts on how his character should evolve without giving him a total rewrite.

Of course, the speculation has been high about the character’s sexual orientation since Bennett came out in real life. But would it serve the ‘Mean Girls’ narrative? The actor set the record straight.

In a new interview on the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast, Bennett told host Tommy DiDario about how much ‘Mean Girls‘ still means to people. When DiDario asked if Aaron should be portrayed as gay in a future movie (since Bennett himself is gay), Jonathan said he wouldn’t want to change the original story.

Bennett took the chance to explain that Aaron has always been written as straight, and that’s just who the character is. “I wouldn’t want to change the narrative of Aaron Samuels because Jonathan Bennett is gay.” According to him, the story should stay true to what made it special in the first place.

What almost surprised us was when Bennett also pointed out how most of the guys from ‘Mean Girls‘ ended up coming out as queer after the movie. The list included the names Daniel Franzese and Rajiv Surendra, as well as his own. But given that so many of them are leading a different life than ‘Mean Girls,’ is there still a possibility of a sequel?

Even though no one has seriously talked about a sequel yet, Bennett said he’d never turn down the chance. Even though there has been no official conversation between the cast yet, there’s definitely interest.

But Bennett wasn’t completely unhesitant. He mentioned, “In the group chat, do we want to do it? Yes.” But he also added, “It’s just been 22 years since we filmed it. We were kids then, and now everyone has grown up.” But no matter what their opinions are, Bennett came clean. He said that at the end of the day, it will be a “Tina Fey question.”

However, when asked what Aaron Samuels might be doing these days, Bennett had a pretty cute idea. And that only proves just how much he still loves the character. He imagined Aaron becoming a teacher at North Shore High, the same school where it all began. In his version, the story would follow the daughters of the original Mean Girls as they start high school with their moms. Obviously, there will be grown-up versions of Cady, Regina, Gretchen, and Karen still tackling their fair share of drama.

Right now, there’s no sequel in the works, but that hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming. Between the ‘Mean Girls‘ musical and Tina Fey’s ongoing connection to the franchise, the possibility of a reunion just keeps growing.
