John Wick is heading back into action, but this time, he won’t be doing it in live-action. Keanu Reeves has officially signed on to reprise his iconic role as the legendary assassin in Lionsgate’s upcoming animated ‘John Wick’ prequel.
‘John Wick’s Impossible Task Finally Gets Its Own Movie
For fans who have followed the franchise since its beginning, this is particularly exciting news. Reeves isn’t simply lending his name to another project. He will once again bring John Wick to life, allowing audiences to explore a chapter of the character’s history that has never been fully shown.

The animated film will focus on one of the most important events in Wick’s life: the infamous Impossible Task. This was the seemingly impossible assignment John had to complete to escape his obligations to the High Table and finally leave his violent profession behind.
His objective was to eliminate all his rivals in a single night. Successfully completing the mission allowed him to walk away from the criminal underworld and build a life with Helen, the woman who gave him a reason to leave everything behind.
The ‘John Wick’ Franchise Continues To Expand
Lionsgate clearly isn’t ready to slow down the franchise. The five-film series, including the spin-off ‘Ballerina’, has generated more than $1 billion worldwide. The project has an interesting creative team behind it. Shannon Tindle will direct the animated feature.

The screenplay comes from Ryan and Kaz Firpo, while the franchise’s familiar production team is also returning. Animation could actually be a great fit for this particular story. The John Wick movies have always pushed choreography, visual storytelling, and elaborate action sequences to extraordinary levels.
An animated format could give the filmmakers even more freedom to experiment with combat and world-building. Alongside the animated prequel, ‘John Wick 5’ remains in development. A standalone movie centered on Donnie Yen’s Caine is also in the works.
Still, the Impossible Task might be the most exciting project among them. Fans have heard about this legendary night for years, and finally getting to witness how John Wick earned his freedom could make for an incredible addition to the franchise.
