Gary Oldman has been active for almost four decades in the film industry, and he has given many memorable performances as a villain in his breakthrough film ‘Bram Stroker’s Dracula’. He was also featured in the ‘Batman’ franchise as James Gordon. But one of the most memorable performances of the actor was that of Sirius Black in the ‘Harry Potter’ series.
Gary Oldman debuted in 2004’s ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’. His last appearance as Sirius Black, the godfather of Harry Potter, was in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’. The actor recently appeared on his podcast and undermined his influence in the world-renowned franchise by calling his performances “mediocre” in the films.

Gary Oldman Said If He Would Have Read ‘Harry Potter’ Books The Actor Would Have Played The Character Differently
In the ‘Harry Potter’ books and movie series, Gary Oldman’s Sirius Black plays a pivotal role. He is the guardian of Harry. Sirius was a rebel, and going against the family, he went to Gryffindor House at Hogwarts. He became good friends with James Potter, Harry’s father. In the film, Garry played the character in two films until he gets killed during the battle of Ministry.
While Sirius Black’s character was an important one, Gary Oldman undermined the character by calling the performance mediocre. Recently, on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Gary talked about the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise and how he would have played the character differently if he read the books.
Gary Oldman said, “I think my work is mediocre in it.” It shocked the host, Josh Horowitz. Gary continued, “No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan Rickman, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”

The Actor Also Talked About The Most Difficult Scene In The Film

As per him, it was the Dementors scene in ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, where they sucked his soul near the Black Lake. The actor had to pretend to be dead at a frozen lake.
Gary Oldman said, “In one of the Harry Potters, there was like a frozen lake. And I’m sort of dead, and my soul is leaving my body, and I had to just lie there for a week, day in, day out, doing nothing. Doing nothing, but then you’d have to get, you know, ‘Can someone – I’m getting a, I think my kidneys are really getting a bit cold.’”
Gary continued, “And then they’d put the little hot water bottle under you, and you’d lie there like that. And then day three, you go, ‘My neck is killing me,’ and they’d put a little pillow underneath you. Yeah, the hardest thing I had to do was lie next to a frozen lake.”
