In the late 1990s, Kate Winslet had, to her credit, more than one role in period films that earned her the reputation of being ‘Corset Kate’ as she had worked in 1995’s ‘Sense and Sensibility‘ and 1996’s ‘Hamlet‘. According to James Cameron, this particular detail left him skeptical of if Winslet’s casting would look like, as he quotes it, “a lazy casting.”

What changed? As Cameron himself said, “But then wiser heads prevailed, and I could see what everybody was talking about,” recalled Cameron. On the screen, he added, Winslet is “very alive. She comes into a room with a great deal of confidence, and she’s got that spark of life.”

Talking about Winslet’s role as Rose, Cameron said, “She had a little postpartum depression when she let go of Rose. She and I have talked about the fact that she goes really, really deep, and her characters leave a lasting, sometimes dramatic impression on her.”

Rose Dewitt Bukater is undoubtedly Kate Winslet’s most memorable role as it even bagged her an Oscar nomination and helped her create a film that will go down as her legacy. She was highly praised for her role and her chemistry with Leonardo DiCaprio, including for that one steamy scene of the two indulging in intimacy.

After the film, Winslet continued to be friends with both Caprio and Cameron and even collaborated on later film projects with both of them. Till this day, the three of them have continued to share a lasting friendship and fans can only hope they make another collaboration soon.

Kate Winslet’s projects this year include the HBO series ‘The Regime,‘ which debuted in March, and starring in ‘Lee‘ as real-life World War II photojournalist Lee Miller
