Future Of ‘Mad Max’ Franchise In Peril As Tom Hardy Bluntly Says He Doesn’t Think ‘Fury Road’ Sequel ‘The Wasteland’ Is Happening

Fans of the high-octane action and post-apocalyptic thrills of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ have been eagerly awaiting news of a sequel titled The Wasteland.’ However, recent comments by Tom Hardy, the film’s lead actor, have cast a shadow of doubt on the project’s future.

Hardy’s comments may signal the end of the road for this specific project. However, the enduring popularity of the Mad Max franchise might bring Max Rockatansky back into our lives in another form someday.

In a candid interview with Forbes, Hardy stated, “I don’t think that’s happening.” This news is a blow to those who were hoping to see Max Rockatansky roar back onto the silver screen. The possibility of a ‘Fury Road’ sequel has been swirling around for years.

Following the critical and commercial success of the 2015 film, director George Miller expressed his desire to continue the story. There were even talks of multiple sequels, expanding the ‘Mad Max‘ universe. Hardy himself previously hinted at his involvement, stating he was “waiting for the call” to return to the role. However, it seems those calls may never come.

Several factors could be contributing to the apparent stalling of ‘The Wasteland.’ One possibility is the notoriously difficult production of ‘Fury Road.’ The film was plagued by creative clashes between Miller and the studio, Warner Bros. These issues might make both parties hesitant to revisit that world.

Additionally, the box office performance of ‘Fury Road,’ while critically acclaimed, wasn’t a massive mainstream hit. Studios are often wary of greenlighting sequels to films that haven’t delivered a blockbuster return which could further be a roadblock.

While Hardy’s comments dampen hope for ‘The Wasteland’ Specifically, the future of Mad Max isn’t entirely barren. Miller recently directedFuriosa,’ a prequel film focusing on Charlize Theron’s now-iconic Imperator Furiosa. However, another roadblock might be the box office performance of ‘Furiosa’.

Despite having a star cast featuring Anya-Taylor Joy as the lead, the movie failed to perform. However, the film still demonstrates Miller’s continued interest in the Mad Max universe. There’s always a chance he could revisit Max Rockatansky’s story down the line.

The story could perhaps continue with a different actor or in a different format like a limited series. However, for now, fans will have to grapple, with the uncertainty surrounding ‘The Wasteland. Only time will tell what the future holds for the wasteland warrior.
