It seems like 2023 is set to be the year of jump frights and spookiness! Although not to forget 2022 also delivered a few horror hits like ‘Fresh’, ‘Orphan: The First Kill’ and Ti West’s ‘X’. Horror now seems to be the most stable genre when compared to romance, comedy, or action with the release of its promising upcoming films.The year 2021 started off with a jump scare from ‘M3ghan’ starring Allison Willams and directed by the legendary horror directer-James Wan. Here’s the list of the upcoming horror movies in 2023.

1. Scream 6
Tyler Gillet’s slasher horror film ‘Scream 6′ is all set to be released on 10 March 2023. Although ‘Scream‘ 2022 is the best addition to the ‘Scream‘ franchise, the audience now has high expectations for ‘Scream 6‘. Fans are excited to watch all of their favorite forgotten characters back together fighting the masked killer.
Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega, Courtney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, and Mellisa Barrera are all set to reprise their previous role in ‘Scream 6′. This installment focuses on the four survivors of the Ghostface killings leaving Woodsboro behind and starting a fresh chapter. This will be the first-ever ‘Scream‘ movie that won’t feature Neve Campbell.
2. Evil Dead Rise
The cult classic horror film is back and all set to be released on the big screens on 21 April 2023. Sam Raimi’s characters are back with Lee Cronin’s scripts and direction. The trailer and the poster release of ‘Evil Dead Rise’ were spin-chilling and spiked excitement amongst the fans, hoping it will cover up the setback of 2013’s ‘Evil Dead‘.
‘Evil Dead Rise’ stars Lilly Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, and Morgan Davis in the lead. The movie follows a decade-late reunion of the sisters which is cut short by the discovery of a mystery book found in the cramped apartment of the elder sister, Ellie. The sister’s survival from the flesh-possessing demons develops into a nightmarish version of motherhood. Feels like Halloween has arrived early this year.
3. Insidious 5
Unlike every other horror film, the ‘Insidious‘ franchise is not a simple tale of a haunted house or a possed doll. Rather it introduces us to the concept of a dark spiritual realm known as ‘The Furthur’. The spirits from this realm do not haunt places instead it haunts people till dead. ‘Insidious: Fear of the dark’ is the directional debut of the ‘Conjuring’ star Patrick Wilson which will be released on 7 July 2023.
Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, and Rose Byrne will reprise their role from the previous installments. The film is set ten years after the end of the previous first two films (‘Insidious’ and ‘Insidious Chapter 2′). Josh Lambert heads to drop his son Dalton off at a university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them.
4. The Haunted Mansion
The second film adapted from Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the same name after the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ is to be released on 11 August. Directed by Justin Simien, the film stars Rosaria Dawson, Owen Wilson, Winona Rider, stand-up comedian Hasan Minaj and Tiffiny Haddish. The cast line-up is definitely exciting and impressive but will it be able to save the film from the damages made by its 2003 version?
Unlike the original version which features a single dad, the reboot version revolves around the life of a single mom and her nine-year-old son starting a new life in a New Orleans mansion. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ has raised the bar too high for the family horror-comedy genre. Only in August, the fans will be able to decide whether The Haunted Mansion was a disappointment or nailed the horror-comedy genre.
5. The Nun 2
The Conjuverse is expanding and its next installment is ‘The Nun 2‘. Directed by Michael Chives it will serve as a sequel to ‘The Nun’ and the ninth installment of ‘The Conjuring‘ universe. The film will star Strom Reid, Taissa Farmiga, Anna Popplewell, Bonnie Aarons, and Jonas Bloquet.
Once again Sister Irene faces the demonic force Valak. ‘The Nun‘ is considered to be one of the most terrifying films of the Conjuverse, now fans are excited about ‘The Nun 2‘ and how will it increase the horror scale. The film will be on the big screen on 8th September.
6. The Exorcist
This year Halloween is going to be more scary than usual, as ‘The Exorcist’ will release on 13 October. Although the title is yet to be decided the cast is locked down. Leslie Odom Jr., Ellen Burstyn, Ann Dowd, and Raphael Sbarge are in the lead role. This installment will serve as a sequel to 1973’s ‘The Exorcist’.
The film follows the journey of the father of a possessed child, who desperately goes in search of someone with similar experiences. It is tough for any sequel to recreate and match the impact that director William Friedkin’s terrifying original religious horror had an impact on the audience upon its initial release.

7. Saw 10
After the disappointment of the 2021 ‘Spiral’, fans are expecting something exciting from Kevin Greutert’s ‘Saw X‘. The sequel stars Tobin Bell, Synnove Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach. Tobin Bell will reprise his role as the jigsaw or John Kramer. ‘Saw X’ will hit the big screens on the 27th of October.
‘Saw X’ will release just in time for the 2023 Halloween and will come up with innovative and inescapable Jigsaw traps with gore details that the franchise is famous for.
8. The Boogeyman
The iconic horror writer Stephen King’s book is all set to be adapted into a feature film. The entire short story takes place in a psychiatrist’s office. Directed by Robert Savage, the film will release on June 2 with Chirs Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and Sophie Thatcher in the lead.
Coping from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl, and her younger sister find themselves in contact with a sadistic presence in their house. They struggle to get their grieving fathers’ attention towards the unexplained activities.
9. The Stranger
The deeply terrifying and disturbing 2008 film is back with its remake. Though the title and the release dates are yet to be announced, the cast list has been released. Riverdale’s star Madelaine Petsch will lead the film. This film marks the third installment of ‘The Stranger’ franchise.
While the plot is similar to the first film – a couple of detours and halts at the Airbnb in the middle of nowhere to find something disturbing. They need to keep themselves alive from three masked strangers who desperately try to kill the couple.
10. Salem’s Lot
Yet another adaption of Stephen King’s novel. ‘Salem’s Lot‘ is created along the lines of the book and shall stay loyal to its original version. A writer goes back to his hometown only to realize that it’s being overrun by blood-sucking vampires. The date of the film is yet to be released.
‘Salem’s Lot’ stars Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard, Bill Camp, and William Sadler in the lead. The story has been previously adapted as both a two-part miniseries in 1979 and TV miniseries in 2004. Over the years, there might be a few aesthetical changes in the appearance of the vampires.
