What Does Tim Allen Regret About ‘Santa Clause 3’?

Jingle bells are chiming again as Tim Allen is coming back after 16 years to reprise his role of Scott Calvin. He is all set to warm up the audience for Christmas with the Disney+ mini-series ‘The Santa Clauses’. He first donned the Santa costume and beard in 1994 in the original film ‘The Santa Clause’. The film became a trilogy with two more films released in 2002 and 2006.

Now he is back with a new story continuing where they left off in the last film of the franchise. Throughout the films, Scott finds his Mrs. Claus, Carol played by Elizabeth Mitchell, but he struggles to balance his new life with a threat from Jack Frost (Martin Short). But, the actor has one regret about the last installment in the franchise.

In the new series, Allen will be retiring from his duties as Santa to focus on his life with his family and go on a new adventure with them. The actor sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss reprising his role, what more can the audience expect from a new story and his association with Disney.

The actor admitted that they “overshot the runway” with ‘The Santa Clause’ 3. While talking about it, he also expresses another regret. He said, “What happened was that we became infected by our own success. [1994’s The Santa Clause] was huge, but we had about $11 for special effects. [2002’s The Santa Clause 2] was an extension of that but now we could put lights in the window because we had more production money. By number three, all we had was money. The story kind of just got bigger and bigger.”

He continued, “And the fact that Marty Short and I never did a scene together that was funny, I’m still going huh. That’s the funniest human being I’ve ever been around, other than me, and we never got a shot to do a real big scene together.”

The new Disney+ series will continue the thread of ‘The Escape Clause’. It is Calvin’s 65th birthday, and he decides to retire and give the responsibility to someone new. He leaves the North Pole with his family. But, the new Santa is up to no good “destroying the Christmas spirit”. So, with his family, and trusted elves, he sets out to find a replacement.

The best part of the series is that Tim Allen will share the screen with his daughter, Elizabeth. During an interview, she shared her “surreal” moment working for the first time with her father. She narrated, “It was the second day of shooting ’cause he didn’t come the first day that I went… and I hear the assistant director get on his walkie and he’s like, ‘Okay everybody, gonna spread out. Mr. Allen is entering the building.”

She continued, “He turns the corner, he’s walking down and he has the fat suit on, the makeup, and the hair, and it was just the most surreal moment. I got goosebumps and I see like everyone around me, the whole cast and crew is like speechless. It’s crazy because I have to think like, this is the character that they watched when they were like kids and it was amazing to see and probably one of the most surreal moments I had on set.”
