The musical adaptation of the film released on January 12 started with positive reviews about the cast and their fresh take on the iconic film. Renee Rapp as Regina George got all the attention, but fans commented on her performance not being up to mark with Rachel McAdams’ version of Regina.
The plot remained the same, with the choice of actors being a little more diverse. The film’s aesthetics leaned a little towards a more ‘Euphoria’-ish tone.

The film’s reviews are mixed, with most of them admiring the cast’s work while also criticizing the making of the film and that it did not really need to be adapted into a musical.
A solid 4.5 out of the 10. I'd much rather rewatch the 2004 film or a bootleg of the Broadway production any day. pic.twitter.com/hMAHm3mkkL

Though the film’s reviews are mixed, is it something that the original cast of the film could have prevented? If so, why were they not cast?

Tina Fey Reveals Why The Original Cast Couldn’t Make It For The Adaptation
When the musical was first announced, there were rumors of a potential reunion with the original cast of the film- something that fans were waiting for. Sadly, the original plastics couldn’t make it to the film, though they did show up for the premiere, giving us a mini-reunion of some sort at least.
In an interview with The New York Times, Tina Fey revealed the real reason why the original cast didn’t get featured in the film. She said, “They’re busy people, so it didn’t come together, but we tried, and we all love each other.”
Talking about the making of the film she said, “I have other things that I’d like to do. But I have so much gratitude that this movie seemed to stick with people. When I look at it, I am reminded of how hard I worked on it in the first place. I feel like the bricks and mortar of it were the absolute best possible job I was capable of at the time. It’s not perfect, but it holds water.”
The ‘Mean Girls‘ musical is in theatres and will soon be available for streaming via Paramount+.
