Margot Robbie-Starrer ‘Barbie’ Has Been Banned In Vietnam
The brand-new film ‘Barbie‘ has been banned in Vietnam because of some issues. The film features a sequence where a map has been depicted with nine-dash lines representing China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea, which as per Vietnam violates the sovereignty.
Director general for the Vietnam Cinema Department Vi Kien Thanh revealed on July 3, 2023, that the National Film Evaluation Council imposed the ban. Warner Bros. is yet to respond on the matter.
Vietnam is one of the neighbors of China and they already had a lot of claims and disputes regarding China’s assertions over the years. A United Nations disputes resolution tribunal in The Hague ruled out unanimously against the validity of the nine-dash line in 2016.
But there were no changes in the South China Sea arbitration and there is no clarity regarding the implementation China stated that it has not recognized the decision so far. Vi Kien Thanh said that they won’t give ‘Barbie‘ any permission for being screened in Vietnam because of the wrong picture of the nine-dash line. The nine-dash line has already brought problems for various films and TV shows in Vietnam.
