Did Timothée Chalamet Denounce Woody Allen And Donate His ‘A Rainy Day In New York’ Salary To Win An Oscar?

Timothée Chalamet became one of the most high-profile actors to publically disavow Woody Allen when he announced that he will be donating his salary from Allen’s movie ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ to the Time’s Up initiative against harassment and assault along with a few other charities.

Chalamet even wore the Time’s Up pin to the Golden Globe Award in 2018 to show his solidarity with the movement. He was nominated for the critically acclaimed ‘Call Me By Your Name’. All of this happened when Woody Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow renewed sexual abuse allegations against him in October 2017 when she wrote a piece in Los Angeles Times questioning why did the #MeToo movement spare Allen?

What Are The Allegations Against Woody Allen?

Woody Allen

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, director Woody Allen, who was formerly recognized as one of the leading voices in American cinema, contributed to the development of the independent western film genre. winning the Best Director Oscar for both ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’ and ‘Annie Hall’. Now he is more well-known in the modern film world as a controversial figure as a result of the accusations of sexual misconduct that were made against him in the 1990s. In 1980, Woody met Mia Farrow who was the mother of seven children and they were in a relationship for 12 years. However, the relationship ended abruptly and dramatically in 1992 when Mia Farrow found a stack of explicit nude images of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn that had been taken by the director when she was at Allen’s residence. Previn was only 21 years old when the images were found, while Woody Allen was in his fifties.

Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, told her mother about an alleged incident of child molestation between herself and the director not long after this finding was made in 1992. Soon-Yi Previn, the daughter of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, makes their relationship public shortly after these charges, and the formerly lauded director is subjected to a barrage of negative press. Why has the #MeToo revolution spared Woody Allen? was the title of Dylan Farrow’s opinion piece for the LA Times in December 2017. She criticized the “deliberately created fog” that the media had built around the Woody Allen tale. Additionally, a month following the publication of the piece, she made an emotional appearance on CBS This Morning and spoke about her relationship with Allen.

The Truth Behind Woody Allen’s Denunciation By Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet didn’t want his collaboration with the contentious filmmaker to spoil his chances of winning an Oscar this year, according to Woody Allen’s memoir. According to a passage from his book ‘Apropos of Nothing’, the then 24-year-old star of his film ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ publicly denounced him after production ended to increase his chances of winning an Oscar for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 drama ‘Call Me by Your Name’. Allen has long denied allegations that he molested Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of his former partner Mia Farrow. “Timothée afterward publicly stated he regretted working with me and was giving the money to charity, but he swore to my sister he needed to do that as he was up for an Oscar for Call Me by Your Name, and he and his agent felt he had a better chance of winning if he denounced me, so he did,” Allen stated in his memoir.

It should be noted that Chalamet indicated that he would donate his ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ salary to Time’s Up, The LGBT Center in New York City, and RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) eight days before his Oscar nomination was announced. Ultimately, Gary Oldman for ‘Darkest Hour’ won the Best Actor award over the ‘Call Me by Your Name’ actor. Along with Chalamet, actress Rebecca Hall also contributed her movie proceeds to Time’s Up, and Selena Gomez is said to have given a sizeable sum to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund that “much exceeded her salary for the film,” as reported by PEOPLE. “Anyhow, I didn’t regret working with him,” Allen continued of Chalamet in the book, “and I’m not giving any of my money back.”
