Elon Musk Apologizes After Mocking A Laid-Off Twitter Employee With Disability

Elon Musk has been making news ever since he bought Twitter last year for $44 billion. What followed is nothing short of a drama film. He went on a firing spree, laying off nearly half of the company’s workforce and introducing new policies that immediately backfired.

Recently, the Tesla CEO has laid off a few more people from the social media giant despite promising not to do so. His conversation with one such person has gone viral on the internet. Musk, who first mocked the ex-employee for his disability, later realized his mistake and apologized.

Elon Musk went on a firing spree after the Twitter acquisition. He fired nearly half of the company’s workforce (including the CEO and CFOs). Months later, this layoff continues in the company.

Haraldur Thorleifsson, a former employee took to Twitter to ask Musk if he has been fired. In response, the billionaire asked some bizarre questions and made fun of Haraldur’s disability.

Musk wrote that “this guy (who is independently wealthy) did no actual work, claimed as his excuse that he had a disability that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.”

In response, Haraldur said that he has muscular dystrophy which has an effect on most parts of his body. He said that he has been in a wheelchair since 25. “I need help to get in and out of bed and use the toilet,” he wrote.

In a later tweet, the former employee, who has been fired from Twitter, took a dig at the billionaire. “Oh! I forgot to mention that I read you can’t go to the toilet on your own either, @elonmusk. I’m sorry to hear about that. I know the feeling. The only difference is I can’t do it because of a physical disability, and you’re afraid someone you hurt will attack you while you poop,” he wrote.

Realizing his mistake, the SpaceX founder issued an apology for mocking Haraldur’s disability. “I would like to apologize to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation“, he wrote.

Musk continued: “It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful. He is considering remaining at Twitter.”
