‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’: Black Queen Controversy Explained

Historical series have played an important role in pulling audiences towards television and OTT platforms. While ‘The Crown’ has been getting recognition for the last seven years for showing the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there is another series that premiered on Netflix based on a similar theme. The name of the show is ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ which was released on May 4, 2023.

It focuses on the life of Queen Charlotte and how she gained recognition as the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Although, there have been speculations about her African heritage.

Queen Charlotte’s complexion details have been disputed

‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ has been getting a decent response. Creator and writer Shonda Rhimes stated that she aimed to show how they got involved in the diverse and inclusive world of the show.

This is important since historians are still discussing if the real Queen Charlotte was black. Historian Mario de Vales y Cocorn said that she was a descendant of Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black branch of the Portuguese royal house. But other historians have also questioned how closely she was linked to her African roots.

A few other historians are assured that the generation gap between Charlotte and her African roots is so great that the suggestion itself seems to be strange. Sir Allan Ramsay also had the opportunity to paint the 1762 portrait of Charlotte and his works were described to have less drama and more accuracy.
