‘Sherlock’ Co-Creator Says “We’d Love To Make A Film” Version With Benedict Cumberbatch And Martin Freeman

Sherlock‘ fans are in for a treat as the show creators have made an exciting announcement about the show’s prospects. Though they have time and again denied any possibility of another season of the popular detective show, Mark Gatiss, one of the creative minds behind it, has hinted at a potential reunion project.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the lead roles, ‘Sherlock‘ is one of the most beloved versions of the detective franchise based on the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Gatiss and his co-creator Steven Moffat, captivated audiences worldwide with the show that brought to screens the thrilling adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Gatiss said he holds an ambition to reunite Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for a ‘Sherlock’ reunion film. However, he also stated that it is quite difficult to get the busy Hollywood schedules of both stars aligned to get the project started. “We’d love to make a film, but gathering everyone together is quite challenging… You’d have to ask Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman,” he said.

This isn’t the first time that Mark Gatiss opened up about his wish to adapt Sherlock into a movie. Back in July 2023, he mentioned to the Guardian that a Sherlock film was “the natural thing to do” after the show concluded with such success. Gatiss also asserted that certain aspects stand as challenges when it comes to filmmaking, as he drew parallels to other long-gestating projects like Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man.

Fans of the show worldwide have also time and again expressed their wishes to get another season of the acclaimed show. Meanwhile, Gatiss has made sure that he makes it to the headlines and teases the possibility of a reunion occasionally. After recently being announced as the writer and star of ‘Bookish’, a new British TV drama set in post-war London, Gatiss is also busy with other projects.

Apart from its stellar cast, ‘Sherlock’ is also known for its exceptional writing, acting, and directing. The series earned several award nominations, including the Emmys, BAFTAs, and a Golden Globe, with Cumberbatch, Freeman, and Moffat all receiving accolades for their contributions.

With thirteen episodes in four seasons and a special episode, ‘Sherlock’ remains a beloved show for many. As fans now await another installment of the show in any other form, Gatiss has just bestowed them with a ray of hope.
