TikTok and Billboard have finally launched a new Top 50 songs chart that will track the most consumed singles on the platform in the United States. Doja Cat’s ‘Paint the Town Red‘ and Taylor Swift’s ‘August‘ held the number two and three spots respectively on the inaugural TikTok Billboard Top 50. The list is led by Sexy Red’s ‘SkeeYee‘.

Paint the Town Red‘ also leads the Hot 100 list. In addition to tracking songs used on TikTok, Billboard also ranks the most-discussed tracks on X, on a chart called the Hot Trending Songs chart. Currently, songs by pop star Olivia Rodrigo are in the top three spots on the chart.

The app’s popularity has also brought some older songs back into the mainstream. Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill‘ made it to Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2022 after the song was first released and it went viral on TikTok last year. ‘Love Grows‘ by Edison Lighthouse, which was initially released in 1970, made it back to Billboard’s top 200 songs last year after TikTok users began using the track in their videos.

TikTok has become a hub for labels to publicize both new releases and back catalog tracks. The company has a global team that works with artists and record labels, negotiates licensing deals with rights holders, and builds new ways for the app to convert its cultural influence into recurring revenue.

Ole Obermann, the global head of music business development at TikTok said, “TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, and each week our passionate community of music fans drives songs onto the Billboard charts. It therefore made perfect sense to partner with Billboard to create the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart. The chart gives a clear picture of the music that is being listened to on TikTok, and consequently starting to trend on DSPs and other services.”

To which the president of Billboard, Mike Van replied, “We are thrilled to partner on the first Billboard chart on TikTok. At Billboard, we are constantly evolving our charts to reflect how fans engage with music and connect them more deeply with the artists they love. We see a clear opportunity to recognize the way music discovery on TikTok is shaping popular culture and are proud to offer this tool to the industry while offering brands a new way to engage with music fans at scale. You’re not no. 1 until you’re no. 1 on Billboard.”
